Best Man Toasts – Funny Yet Respectful

When giving a best man wedding speech, I think one thing all speakers will agree on is that they want at least part of their speech to be humorous. However, they’ll also likely also agree that coming up with jokes that are both funny and tasteful is one of the hardest parts of writing a best man’s speech. I mean, while we might be able to think of many crass or embarrassing jokes, we have to remember that the bride and groom’s entire family is likely present, and so we don’t want our best man toast to contain elements that might offend grandma!

Of course, we don’t want to omit humor altogether as nobody enjoys a dry speech, and we want to keep the audience engaged in what the best man is saying. What I suggest doing with best man toasts is writing the speech first without jokes, and instead simply emphasizing the positive points about the groom and the bride and telling stories of your experiences with them. Then, once you have a rough draft written try to pepper a few jokes into it. This will ensure that the speech is not too humor centered (remember, you’re e not doing a comedy skit), but also has enough funny parts to keep the audience entertained.

Also, remember to engage the wedding guests by making frequent eye contact with a variety of people, rather than focusing yourself solely on the bride and groom, as this will help to keep everybody’s attention.
