Getting Started On A Best Man’s Speech
When my buddy Mark told me he would be getting married, I had no doubt that I’d be his best man. I mean, we’ve been best friends since elementary school so it was only natural. And while I was excited about planning the bachelor party and having a good time at the wedding, it took me awhile to realize that I’d be expected to give a best man toast.
Now, public speaking has never been my strong point, as I’m not always the most eloquent guy, but I wanted to be able to give a best man’s speech that would make my buddy proud and amuse the other wedding guests. Just like speeches I had seen delivered by best men before.
However, I didn’t really know how to start and so it took me quite awhile to get my speech going in the right direction. The main thing that helped was writing down descriptive words of my friend Mark, and after I had compiled a big list, I started to think of the different times that he had displayed those characteristics. Doing this helped me to remember a variety of real stories (some of them funny, some not but don’t worry about being funny yet) that really best described who Mark is as a person.
The most important advice I can give others who are writing a best man’s wedding speech is to just start writing things down, even if it’s a word here and a word there. It doesn’t have to flow when you’re just getting started, as you can piece everything together and expand on specific points later on.
